2010/12/22That’s how I want to write. With so much space round a few words… The words must simply accentuate the silence… And it will be harder to shape and animate that silence than to find the words… It will be a matter of the right proportion between words and wordlessness, a wordlessness in which more happens than in all the words we can string together.

2010/12/07The Hare with Amber Eyes
2010/12/06The ceramic artist Edmund de Waal, in his sort-of-memoir ‘The Hare with Amber Eyes‘:
All this matters because my job is to make things. How objects get handled, used and handed on is not just a mildly interesting question for me. It is my question. I have made many, many thousands of pots. I am very bad at names, I mumble and fudge, but I am good on pots. I can remember the weight and the balance of a pot, and how its surface works with its volume. I can read how an edge creates tension or loses it. I can feel if it has been made at speed or with diligence. If it has warmth. I can see how it works with the objects that sit nearby. How it displaces a small part of the world around it.

2010/12/06le tourbillon de la vie
2010/12/03Wim Wenders (maker of moving images) introduces his 1989 documentary, Notebook on Cities and Clothes, about Yohji Yamamoto (maker of beautiful habits), with the following interrogation of shifting identities in a fluctuating habitat:
You live wherever you live,
You do whatever work you do,
You talk however you talk,
You eat whatever you eat,
You wear whatever clothes you wear,
You look at whatever images you see,
You’re living however you can,
You are whoever you are.
‘Identity’…
Of a person,
Of a thing,
Of a place.
‘Identity’
The word itself gives me shivers.
It rings of calm, comfort, contentedness.
What is it, identity?
To know where you belong?
To know your self worth?
To know who you are?
How do you recognize identity?
We are creating an image of ourselves,
We are attempting to resemble this image…
The accord
Between the image we have created
Of ourselves
And … ourselves?
Just who is that, ‘ourselves’?
We live in the cities.
The cities live in us …
Time passes.
We move from one city to another.
We change languages,
We change habits,
We change opinions,
We change clothes,
We change everything.
Everything changes. And fast.
Images above all change faster …
